Any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic,” said science fiction author and futurist Arthur C Clarke. In creating DevStudio.ai, a solution created in-house by Tata Elxsi to cater to the needs of the automotive industry and to enable automotive companies to achieve their goals faster, one might say that the company has certainly created a kind of magic.
In a world in which software defined vehicles are increasingly coming into their own, cutthroat competition demands that OEMs innovate quickly and launch upgrades to stay relevant in the market. Development cycles of 18-24 months, an average in the industry, could see companies being overtaken in the marketplace by more innovative competitors.
An ingenious approach was called for. That’s why Tata Elxsi created DevStudio.ai, an Automotive Multi-Agentic Design and Engineering Studio that enables Human-AI collaboration with the goal of reducing manual effort, and improving quality and delivery speed.
The speedy delivery is a result of DevStudio.ai’s use of multiple AI agents working collaboratively across engineering functions. Each agent workflow focuses on each of the ASPICE (Automotive Software Process Improvement and Capability Determination)
process areas, while ensuring continuity across the development life cycle.
DevStudio.ai supports all key stages of the ASPICE V-cycle, including System Requirements Engineering, Software Requirements and Architecture, Design and Implementation, Test Engineering and End-to-End Traceability Management.
Pallavi Dalal, TBU AI-GenAI competency head, Tata Elxsi, says, “DevStudio.ai stands out from other tools of its kind because of three major attributes: a) the end-to-end coverage of the software development cycle that it offers; b) its domain specificity and c) its ability to accelerate the software development life cycle.”
Made to order
Unlike generic AI coding tools, DevStudio.ai is customised for the automotive industry and is aligned with ASPICE processes. The programme is designed for both OEM and Tier 1 toolchains.
Ms Dalal says, “Unlike the development of software for general purposes, the development of automotive software demands strict quality check, ASPICE compliance, traceability, stricter regulation compliance and extensive documentation.”
An assessment of available GenAI tools showed that none of them were automotive compliant. Ms Dalal adds, “Since the requirement was specific, the solution too needed to be specific. So we combined our automotive expertise with AI skills to build this scalable solution.”
DevStudio.ai is aligned with the automotive tool chain. The software can cater to both EVs and ICE models and to their subsystems, including the body control module, dashboard, infotainment module, advanced driver assist systems etc, for both traditional and software defined vehicle architectures.
A sharp tool
In the initial phase, Tata Elxsi has deployed the software for multiple Tier 1 suppliers and OEMs. These deployments have demonstrated clear speed-to-market and productivity gains across multiple domains, including body, chassis, infotainment, and SDV architectures.
The suppliers and OEMs can benefit from the accelerated pace at which the output can be delivered to them, all while maintaining data security and protecting the confidentiality of the client.
Sundar Ganapathi, CTO Automotive, says, “Our program integrates seamlessly with widely used OEM and Tier-1 engineering toolchains, enabling teams to embed DevStudio.ai co-engineers directly into existing development environments.”
Software solution
In a world in which software calls the shots, Tata Elxsi is excited about the potential of DevStudio.ai. Mr Ganapathi says, “Software contributes to more than 40% of a car’s total value, a value that is increasingly exponentially. Software Architectures are a critical element for OEMs to be able to design, develop and offer Software defined features to customers quickly.” In such a situation, DevStudio.ai has the potential to become a critical differentiator for Tata Elxsi.
Already, the software has proven its capabilities, with multiple OEMs and Tier1 across the globe.
The success of its winning product is now encouraging Tata Elxsi to look at other industries such as aerospace and rail that could potentially benefit from a program like DevStudio.ai.
