Defender Rally made an outstanding debut in the its 2026 World Raid-Rally Championship (W2RC( campaign with a statement win, taking the Stock class at the 2026 Dakar Rally in January. Rokas Baciuška and Oriol Vidal led the team’s debut effort, with Sara Price and Sean Berriman completing a commanding one-two finish.

It followed that triumph with another class win at BP Ultimate Rally-Raid Portugal in March, where Stéphane Peterhansel and Michaël (Mika) Metge headed an all-Defender top three. A third victory followed at Desafío Ruta 40 in Argentina in May, again through Mr Peterhansel and Mr Metge, underscoring the car’s all-round performance and the team’s competitiveness across a wide range of rally-raid conditions. And in October, the same duo wound up the season with another win at the Rallye de Maroc.

Defender Rally driver Mr Baciuška and his co-driver Mr Vidal were crowned the FIA champion stock car driver and co-driver respectively, and Defender Rally won the Stock Manufacturers' Champion title for the 2026 World Rally-Raid Championship (W2RC).

The car’s debut season couldn’t be more impressive. The Defender Dakar D7X-R is based on the production Defender Octa and built at JLR’s Nitra facility in Slovakia. Besides a few W2RC authorised modifications to make the car competition-ready —  including changes to fuel storage, tyres, brakes, suspension and other specifics — the D7X-R remains closely aligned with the commercially available Defender Octa. The cars use the same powerful 4.4-litre twin turbo V8 powertrain as well as the tough core Defender architecture.

The success is powered by a line-up that blends pedigree with momentum. Mr Peterhansel, the most decorated competitor in Dakar history, is one of the sport’s most experienced figures. Mr Baciuška has emerged as one of rally-raid’s leading young talents, converting that promise into a Dakar class win for the team. Ms Price, already a proven off-road racer, has also played a central role in Defender’s early success, adding depth to a driver roster that has quickly turned the programme into one of the championship’s standout stories.

Behind the scenes, a large contingent of engineers, analysts, technicians and support staff works tirelessly to keep the cars and drivers going. Off-roading is demanding on man and machine alike; sustained high-performance requires a level of knowledge, experience, discipline, and teamwork that only a handful of teams have. The fact that Defender Rally has dominated right from its first rally-raid in its debut season is a testament to these attributes.

Throughout the triumphant 2026 season, the team were supported by Official Partners Castrol, YETI, Bilstein, Bell & Ross, and Epic Games, along with official suppliers Shackleton and Alpinestars.
