It is this Defender that will be the basis for the grueling Dakar Rally 2026. It is the Defender that’s been three years in the making during which it went through almost 14,000 tests, at the tracks at Nürburgring in Germany, on ice in Sweden, and in the heat in Dubai. It is the first Defender that has conquered every trail at JLR’s testing facility at Eastnor Castle in the United Kingdom.

And it’s here in India. Defender OCTA, named for the octahedral shape that gives diamonds their distinctive appearance and durability, was officially launched on March 26, 2025.

On its launch, Rajan Amba, Managing Director, JLR India, said, “with the launch of Defender OCTA, we are introducing the toughest and the most durable model in the Defender family, that takes luxury and high-performance capability to another level. With the New Defender OCTA, we are offering a vehicle that is not only capable of conquering the most challenging terrains but also delivering a premium driving experience.”

Powered by a 4.4 litre Twin Turbo mild-hybrid V8 engine, OCTA is the most extreme and most powerful Defender ever, with 467 kW and up to 750 Nm1 of torque enabling 0-100 km/h in just 4.0 seconds. The chassis has been heavily revised with components that use innovative technologies, for example the 6D Dynamics suspension, that ensure its dynamic capabilities are taken to new heights.

The exterior is bolder and tougher with a distinct character. The ride height is raised, its stance widened, and wheel arches extended for incredible presence, prompting Hormazd Sorabjee, the editor of Autocar India who has tested and reviewed automobiles for over thirty years to say, “It’s like a skyscraper going flat out.”

Redesigned bumpers give improved approach and departure angles, while tough underbody protection gives drivers the confidence to explore further over rough terrain. And, it will wade deeper than any production Defender before it too – through up to one metre of water.

Says Sorabjee in his video review of the car, “To find that balance between comfort on the tarmac and not being too soft, bumpy and bouncy on dirt, Land Rover have really nailed it. Defender OCTA just feels solid, planted, on any surface, at any speed. It’s just amazing.”

The Defender OCTA in Faroe Green underwent 14,000 tests including in the sands of Dubai
