Air India Express marked an important milestone in its fleet modernisation programme when it showcased its first line-fit Boeing 737-8 aircraft at the Wings India 2026 civil aviation event held in Hyderabad from 28-31 January, 2026.

A key highlight of the event was the airline being conferred the prestigious Best Airline – Domestic Connectivity award, which celebrates Air India Express’ commitment to strengthening intra-country routes, enhancing accessibility, and improving air connectivity across India.

Designed for comfort

Flown from Boeing’s facility in Seattle, the VT‑RNT aircraft — named ‘The Visionary’ — has been configured and thoughtfully designed in keeping with Air India Express’ exact specifications. The cabin features ergonomically designed seats with comfortable cushioning, generous legroom, and fast-charging power outlets present in every seat to elevate comfort, space and convenience. The aircraft is also equipped with onboard ovens for hot Gourmair meals, spacious overhead bins for cabin baggage, a quieter cabin ambience and Boeing’s signature Sky Interior with soothing mood lighting — creating a modern, welcoming cabin environment for passengers.

Remarking on the induction of the airline’s first line-fit aircraft, Aloke Singh, Managing Director, Air India Express, said, “We are proud to welcome our 51st Boeing B737-8, the first of the fully customised line-fit aircraft, marking a significant step in Air India Express’ fleet modernisation journey. Two-thirds of the airline fleet now comprises of modern B737-8s and A320/321Neo aircraft, offering better fuel-efficiency and superior on-board comfort.” He added, “On the back of this rapid fleet growth, we have expanded our network to 60 destinations, adding 12 destinations in 2025 alone. As India’s aviation market continues to evolve, Air India Express is emerging as a strong connector of New India, enhancing connectivity to/from tier-2 and tier-3 cities with network footprint spanning India, the Middle East, South East Asia and South Asia.”

The airline has also launched a comprehensive retrofit programme to ensure a consistent onboard experience across its Boeing 737‑8 fleet. Under this initiative, 50 aircraft currently in service will be upgraded to a standardised 189‑seat configuration, with two aircraft already having completed the transformation.

Through its #TalesOfIndia initiative, Air India Express brings India’s vibrant cultural tapestry to life, turning aircraft tails into striking symbols of the nation’s artistic heritage. Featuring over 50 indigenous art forms from 25 states across the country — from Bandhani, Kalamkari and Warli to Ikat, Patola, and Kanjeevaram — the initiative celebrates the diversity of India’s regional crafts and traditions. A standout at Wings India 2026 was the VT‑RNT aircraft showcased in a distinct livery inspired by the intricate elegance of Parsi Gara embroidery — the latest addition to the #TalesOfIndia.

The airline operated the first international commercial flight of its newly inducted, fully custom-configured Boeing 737-8 aircraft from New Delhi to Muscat.
