Pathardi village in Jawhar block of Palghar district, Maharashtra, is recognised an exemplary model of development using an 'integrated approach'. But that wasn't always the case. Until 2018, it was perhaps one of the state's most backward regions with 99 percent tribal population and more than 72 percent of people falling under the poverty line.
That year, Tata Motors launched its Integrated Village Development Programme (IVDP) in the village, adopting a Government Convergence Model to deliver holistic change. The approach combined interventions in water security, agriculture, livelihoods, women’s empowerment, healthcare, infrastructure, and governance, with community participation at its core.
In just three years, the turnaround was remarkable. Villagers improved their incomes, adopted sustainable agricultural practices, embraced environmental conservation, and built resilience.
The success in Palghar inspired Tata Motors to scale IVDP to Pune, Sanand, Jamshedpur, and Lucknow, focusing on vulnerable SC, ST, and tribal communities.
