Tata
Communications representative to chair Wireless Broadband
Alliance

In a significant recognition of the role
being played by the company, Tata Communications has
been elected to lead the Wireless Broadband Alliance
(WBA) as chair of the alliance. The company's vice president
planning, Retail Business, Prateek Pashine, has
been appointed as the chairman of WBA.
Into its fifth year of operation, the Wireless Broadband
Alliance was created to drive the adoption of wireless
broadband technologies and services around the world
by developing a common commercial, technical and marketing
framework for wireless network interoperability. The
WBA is now aggressively pursuing with various other
alliances and forums on other forms of wireless broadband
roaming like dual-mode devices and wi-max roaming.
Tata Communications is the only Indian telecommunications
company to be a part of this prestigious industry forum
and Mr Pashine is the first Indian to hold this position.
"It is an honour for Tata Communications to be
given this responsibility. The company which has the
largest number of wi-fi hotspots in India and is also
currently rolling out India's largest wi-max network,
will now further leverage on this experience to help
evolve global wireless standards," said Prateek
Pashine, on the announcement of his election.

services in India and continues to be an important player
in the Indian wireless broadband market which has the
potential to replicate the success story of Indian mobile

Tata Communications has been leading the growth of wi-fi
hotspot industry in India and today has the largest
public hotspot network in India with around 350 hotspots.
It has drawn up plans year to further enhance the footprint
to over 1,000 hotspots bringing the internet
that much more closer to the large Indian travelling
and on-the-move population. The company has recently
launched wi-max services for retail customers and has
been offering this service for domestic customers since
December 2007. The company plans to invest $500 million
in the next few years on wi-max technology.
