Celebrating the season at Westside
Usha Somayaji and V. Jagannathan

Westside, Pune
In Pune, Westside store has ushered in the spirit of Christmas anew, with its theme of giving and sharing. Step inside, and the air is unmistakable: bonhomie, fun, and festivity, and a feeling of camaraderie. The sights, the sounds, all proclaim the mood of the season. If it is the jingling of the carol singers' melodious tunes in one corner, it is the Master (Mistress here) of Ceremonies picking out a prize-winning child at another, or some lucky child being photographed along with Santa at a third.

There are fun activities on every floor — an adventurous youngster getting his/her face painted in bright hues and designs on one floor, while another looks expectantly into the mirror as she gets her hair braided with colourful ribbons and strings on another. On yet another floor, it's mehndi time, and for those inclined for the ludicrous, an artist is at hand to quickly sketch a caricature.

Inside the store, the shelves abound with X'mas merchandise. Clothes for formal wear, party wear, and casual wear and even for the bold and daring. On offer are candles, holly, wreaths, mistletoe and gifts, glitzy, bright and festive. Outside, a modern-day sleigh-on-wheels (an open van) filled with balloons carries Santa around town, to give away gifts and spread the word about the goodies at the store.

"Our aim is to create excitement, going with the festive season," says Pune store manager Rinku Thakur. And how! Families are coming in droves, shopping for family and friends, enjoying and sharing the happy atmosphere.
