S Ramadorai appointed honorary consul general of Uruguay in Mumbai

Tata Consultancy Services and Uruguay further strengthened their relationship after S Ramadorai, CEO and MD was appointed as the Honorary Consul General of Uruguay in Mumbai today.

The Uruguayan ambassador to India, William Ehlers handed over the accreditation and letter from president A P J Abdul Kalam and the official flag of Uruguay to Ramadorai.

"TCS has had a long and successful relationship with Uruguay and with Ramadorai as the honorary consul general in Mumbai, this relationship between the two countries will emerge stronger," said ambassador William Ehlers.

"It would be my pleasure to facilitate trade and friendship between the people of these two great nations. My several visits to Uruguay have left me very impressed with the pace of development of the economy as well as the natural beauty of the region," said S Ramadorai, CEO and MD of TCS. "There is also a great cultural fit in the value systems of Uruguayans and Indian people, especially the emphasis on strong family ties," he added.

TCS has been the pioneer of global IT outsourcing in Uruguay after making a setting up operations there in 2002 - the first Indian IT company to do so. With over 750 software professionals working for TCS in Montevideo, the company has now entered a high growth phase and is growing at over 100 per cent a year.

TCS has also set up a regional training center in Montevideo that will serve as a training platform to upgrade the technology skills of the firm's employees across Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Mexico, Uruguay and other countries in the region. This is the first such investment in the area of training and development by any Indian firm in Latin America.

In a unique two-way flow of skills and knowledge, TCS has also helped introduce talented Uruguayan professionals to India. Carlos Ott a leading architect from Uruguay is designing TCS' new state-of-the-art campus at Siruseri in Chennai, which will be home to 24,000 employees.
