2000, the IT quiz organised by Tata Consultancy
Services for the school children of Hyderabad
was a resounding success. Over 1000 students representing
schools from all over the city participated in
the quiz -- the first of its kind in Hyderabad.
The quizmaster, Giri Balasubramaniam of Quizbrain.com, had the students fielding questions
in areas such as the Internet, IT buzzwords and acronyms, personalities -- international,
national and local, advertisements of IT and communications companies, software products,
history of events pertaining to IT, and also humour in IT.
The average scores in the
preliminary round in the Hyderabad quiz were far higher than those in the quizzes held in
Chennai, Bangalore and Thiruvananthapuram, which underscored Hyderabad's potential to
become the IT capital of the country. By the quiz master's own admission, the questions
for the final round were 'tough' for children belonging to classes between eight and
twelve, but the children proved that they were better than even IT professionals when it
came to IT awareness.
The winners were Bhaskara Aditya and Vinesh Reddy from St. Patrick's High School. The
winners and runners-up received a large booty of prizes that included cash prizes, desktop
organisers, cameras, watches and much more.
The
guests of honour, Dr T.H. Chowdary (IT advisor, Govt. of Andhra Pradesh), Mr. J.
Satyanarayana (IT Secretary, Govt. of Andhra Pradesh), and TCS Hyderabad's regional
manager, Mr V. Chandrashekhar, distributed the prizes.
Mr. J. Satyanarayana was impressed with the students' high standard of knowledge in the IT
area. Dr Chowdary remarked that these were the students who would help make India an
intellectual superpower. The students and organisers felt a sense of achievement, and
everybody was inspired to reach for greater heights.
The quiz was organised by TCS with the intention
of instilling, encouraging and promoting IT awareness
among school children, in tune with the organisation
and the Tata Group's larger purpose of service
to society and promotion of education. The quiz
in Hyderabad was the fourth in a series of IT
quizzes being held in various Indian cities.
