Tata Consultancy
Services (TCS), the largest Indian IT company in terms
of sales, is also the top employer in the country with
a workforce of 95,000 employees as on June 30, 2007.
The software major is followed by Infosys and Wipro
Technologies with 75,971 and 72,137 employees respectively,
according to Nasscom's rankings of top 20 IT-ITeS employers
in India for FY07 released on Thursday.
The top 20 companies in the sector collectively employ
over 500,000 people of the 1.6 million employed directly
in the industry. The rankings are based on the India-based
headcount of firms with IT-ITeS operations in India.
HCL Technologies, Cognizant, Satyam Computer Services,
HP, Genpact, Oracle and Intelenet Global Services have
also featured among the top 10.
"The IT-ITeS industry is India's largest employment
generator in the organised sector today, creating jobs
for over 7.5 million people both directly and indirectly,
and as per our research this figure is expected to cross
10 million by 2010," said Nasscom president Kiran
Karnik in a statement.
Nasscom attributed this employment generation to a varied
combination of factors such as healthy growth environment,
attractive remuneration and different kinds of employment
opportunities in the new economy, based on varying skill
sets, and the availability of talent in India which
meets the employment projections.
"Today, this employment is spread across many cities,
and the industry is increasingly going to tier-II and
tier-III cities. The process of widespread geographical
dispersion of the sector is being adversely affected
by the non-extension of the STPI scheme and attendant
tax incentives," Karnik added.
