TCS to spend Rs
15 cr on Kolkata centre
Asian Age - September 25, 2002
Kolkata:
Tata Consultancy
Services is unmoved by the continued slowdown in the global IT
arena.
Asia’s largest
software services company will be spending close
to Rs 15 crores on a new development centre
at Kolkata. It is also on a recruitment spree,
unlike other software companies.
"We are in the
process of setting up a 25,000 square feet development centre at
Saltlec near Kolkata, adjacent to our existing set up. The final
decision will be taken soon," said vice-president
(corporate communication), Atul Takle. "Currently, we have
1,616 employees stationed in Kolkata and the staff strength will
be increased by 450 shortly," he added.
TCS presently has
around 19,000 employees, catering to over 800 clients around the
world including General Electric, American Express, AIG and
Boeing.
TCS hired more than
3,000 techies last year and expects a similar trend in the
current financial year.
"We are actually
short of man-power for specific projects. A few days ago, we
even recruited 200 professionals on the basis of
walk-in-interviews and are planning to induct more professionals
again through such a process," Mr Takle said.
TCS, is also
integrating the operations of CMC Ltd which was acquired by the
company though a divestment process, sources said.
"We are currently
going through the process of integration of the human resource,
quality and the cultural aspects of these two companies. The key
people of both TCS and CMC are working on the
process,"
Mr Takle added.
