TCS tools to
automate software development

Tata Research
Development and Design Centre, the R&D division
of Tata Consultancy Services, is automating the
software development process and reducing the
human interaction, is developing software code,
Mr Mathai Joseph, executive director of the centre
stated. "The research centre develops tools
to implement large projects which are otherwise
not possible to implement in a limited time,"
Mr Joseph said on Friday.
Maintaining large teams for big projects is not
possible and to overcome this situation the centre
constantly develops tools to automate the process,
he said. The company has developed many of such
tools into new products like MasterCraft, Adex,
Consult, Infrex, Darpan, Assent, CemPac among
others. The new automation tools developed by
the centre like MasterCraft generate about 350
lines of code per person-day against the industry
average of 500 lines of code per person-month,
thus cutting the time to develop and market the
products, he said.
TCS has set up the world's first tools foundry,
he claimed. These tools have helped TCS to enter
successfully into the product sphere where not
many software firms from India are operating,
he said adding that the company aims to generate
30 per cent of its revenues from software product
segment. The centre files about 15-20 patents
every year to protect its intellectual properties,
he said.
