on development facility in
East Europe

New Delhi:
After setting foot in
China, Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) may look for setting up
another overseas software development facility in Eastern Europe
within this financial year.
This was indicated by
TCS senior vice president Phiroz Vandrevala on the sidelines of
a media conference organised by the company to announce the
launch of its subsidiary in China.
"We may set up one
more development center outside India this year and it might be
somewhere in Eastern Europe," he said without naming any
particular country.
TCS already has
overseas development centers in Canada, Australia, Uruguay and
the UK.
Talking about China, Mr
Vandrevala said that the Tata Sons has been granted a licence by
the China government to float a subsidiary, Tata Information
Technology (Shanghai) Co Ltd, which will be operated and managed
by TCS. TCS is also currently a division of Tata Sons.
The company expects to
have around 150 people on board in the China subsidiary by the
end of one year.
The company will also
send a few Indian employees besides recruiting local people from
China. Headquartered in Shanghai, its marketing office will be
in Beijing and development center in Hangzhou.
Mr Vandrevala claimed
that the company has confirmed orders from some of its
multinational clients like General Electric and insurance major
AIG to provide technology and development support to kick off
operations in China.
"TCS will start
working with existing international clients and expand its
operations in local Chinese market besides gaining entry in
other Asian countries like Korea and Japan. The Chinese
operations will also be capitalised to service global clients
outside China in the long run," he said.
Despite
the cost of operations being higher by 10-15 per
cent in China as compared to India, TCS would
also undertake new product and technology development
work in areas like mobile communication and embedded
software to capitalise on the mature market in
China, he added.
