Tele offers internet access on entry level phones

Telecom service provider Tata
Teleservices today announced the launch of a new browser
that allows web access even on entry level colour mobile
handsets.
The company is targeting youth with the launch of new
software Opera Mini software, an application currently
available on Huwaei C2900i priced at Rs 1,999.
"The new offering will enable our customers specially
the youth to use internet even on basic mobile handsets
at an affordable price," Tata Teleservices president
(value- added services) Pankaj Sethi told reporters
here.
The new product offers web access not only in English
but also in other languages like Hindi, Urdu, Tamil,
Bengali, French and German.
"We have introduced this new offering with the
entry level colour handsets, but will also move to high
end sets and other languages very soon," he said.
The company is providing services to pre-paid and post-
paid customers at a price of Rs one for one day, Rs
30 for seven days and Rs 99 for 30 days.
Currently, the software supports basic browsing and
is not configured to open flash web pages or downloading
and uploading of images, videos and other heavy files.
According to Sethi, there are seven million personal
computers in India, while the number of internet users
was close to 38 million.
The Value-Added Services division contributes 9.4 per
cent to the total revenues of Tata Teleservices and
the company expects this figure to go with the launch.
