The Dam Dim getaway

Wilderness, a luxurious bungalow and the awe-inspiring heights of Kanchenjunga, Tata Tea's Dam Dim tea estate brings all of them together to give guests a once-in-a-lifetime experience

Imagine acres upon acres of tea bushes and forest. Imagine you are strolling through a mist walking through the endless stretches of green on a crisp winter morning. A river flows nearby and the sounds of nature are alive all around you. You take in a lungful of clean, cool, mountain air and exhale your tensions away. If you want a bit of this in your life, getaway to the Dam Dim tea estate!

Tata Tea's Dam Dim tea estate in West Bengal is located close to the Gorumara forest and overlooks the bewitching Kunchenjunga — the world's third highest mountain. It is about 45 km away from Siliguri, connected by a meandering road. Staying at the estate gives holiday goers a unique insight into the lives of tea planters and a chance to unwind in the homely yet extravagant environs of the estate's deputy general manager's bungalow.

A room in the Dam Dim getaway

Situated in the heart of the tea estate, the bungalow has been converted to three luxurious suites. On arrival, guests are welcomed with a hot cup of tea and looked after by household help during their stay. Vegetables, fruits, herbs and spices are picked fresh from the mali bari (vegetable garden) and food is served in the colonial planters' style. Food can also be bought from the haat (local market).

Guests can explore the Dooars Valley (this region forms a major part of the Jalpaiguri district where Dam Dim is located) and visit the Lava, Loleygaon and Gorumara wild life sanctuaries. The more adventurous can go whitewater rafting in the Teesta river, trek through the tea garden or photograph wild elephants while perched on a tree top machaan (platform built on a tree). If this sounds too hectic, pack your picnic basket and settle down on the banks of the Chel river. And if this is too much activity, then just sit back and feast your eyes on the variety of birds for whom this region is home.

To complete the Dam Dim experience, guests are shown the fascinating process of tea making. From the bushes to the factory and into the teacup, guests find out what goes into making the perfect blend for the perfect cuppa.
