Tata
Steel conferred with Mother Teresa Award For Corporate
Citizen 2005

The
governor of Tamil Nadu, Surjit Singh Barnala, presented
The Mother Teresa Award for Corporate Citizen 2005 to
Tata Steel at a function held at the Loyola Institute
of Business Administration (LIBA), Loyola College campus,
Nungambakkam, Chennai on Wednesday, on December 6, 2006.
Dr S Asokan, chief of Titania Business Unit ,Tata Steel,
received the award on behalf of the company.
Loyola Institute of Business
Administration (LIBA) Loyola College, Chennai, has instituted
this award in the name of Mother Teresa, the angel of
mercy and compassion, for 'Corporate Citizen' in the
year 1998 to uphold to management students, the corporate
world and the general public a business enterprise as
a role model in responsible corporate citizenship for
its deep involvement in programmes of social responsibility
beyond the call of its duty.
Once in three years, LIBA constitutes
an award committee consisting of persons of eminence
known for their social commitment and wide experience
to identify and select a corporate that fulfills the
requirements to receive the award.
This year, a committee headed
by N Vittal, IAS.(Retd), former Central Vigilance Commissioner,
government of India, with A.X. Alexander, IPS, former
Director General of Police, Tamil Nadu, Mr.Gopal Srinivasan,
M.D., TVS Electronics and Ramraj, former MD & CEO.,
Sify Ltd, T.S. Krishnamurthy, IRS (Retd) former Chief
Election Commissioner and Preetha Reddy, MD, Apollo
Hospitals, as members of the committee. The award committee
after due research, deliberations and taking into account
the presentations made by prospective claimants to the
award selected Tata Steel as the recipient.
The previous recipients of the
award are Titan Industries (1998), TamilNadu Newsprint
and Papers Limited (1999), Orchid Chemicals and Pharmaceuticals
Limited (2000), Indian Oil Corporation (2001), Shriram
Investments Ltd., (2002) , Polaris Limited (2003) and
TVS Motor Company (2004).
The award committee selected
Tata steel for this prestigious award this year for
the companys outstanding social commitment and
commendable involvement in programmes of corporate responsibility
far beyond the call of duty, especially: for its unflinching
adherence to quality and productivity and for earning
commendable recognition as a world class steel maker;
for its abiding commitment to the core values of integrity,
ethical business practices, employee welfare and customer
satisfaction; for its singular contribution to education,
social and scientific research; for its deep involvement
in programmes that promote socio-economic empowerment
of the poor, and the disadvantaged sections of society;
and for its concern for environment protection not only
in and around its factories and facilities, but also
in far off locations that need to be made more habitable.
