Training
camp for Bangladeshi athletes inaugurated at Jamshedpur
November 6, 2006
Bangladesh
Olympic Association (BOA) has selected eighteen sportspersons
in the events of boxing, athletics and archery, who
will undergo training in the sports facilities of Tata
Steel, Jamshedpur. The training camp is being inaugurated
by A N Singh, deputy managing director, Tata Steel,
on November 6 at Jamshedpur. The camp will be held for
a period of two months, after which selected athletes
shall attend the Asian Games in Doha.
The visiting group of Bangladeshi
sportspersons consists of eight archers, six boxers,
four athletes and four officials. The group of eight
archers includes four men and four women archers. These
archers will also participate in the upcoming second
Commonwealth Archery Championship being held at Jamshedpur.
It may be recalled that on September
3, 2006, Tata Steel signed a memorandum of understanding
with BOA, in which it was agreed that Tata Steel would
train Bangladeshi sportspersons recommended by BOA on
an ongoing basis.
Tata Steel has proposed a steel plant and a coal mine
in Bangladesh, and in line with its philosophy of 'partners
in progress', it has undertaken this effort. This is
the first time that Tata Steels corporate social
responsibility activities would reach out across the
national borders of the country.
Tata Steel has always held sports
as an integral part of a better quality of life. The
founder, Jamsetji Tata had directed his son Dorabji
Tata to "be sure there is plenty of space for lawns
and gardens. Reserve large areas for football, hockey..."
Over the years, the Tatas have promoted a wide range
of sports, spanning the more popular ones such as cricket,
hockey, football to tennis, volleyball, boxing, powerlifting,
athletics, badminton, table tennis, basketball, and
also less mainstream sports like judo, chess, bridge
and archery. It is the only Indian company to invest
in world-class facilities, create academies and to maintain
and manage international level arenas.
