Tata
Steel turns 100, announces social initiatives

Private sector giant Tata Steel on Tuesday announced
two major social initiatives as part of its celebrations
on completing 100 years of existence.
The first project is a land and water management programme
in association with the Sir Ratan Tata Trust in the
three states of Orissa, Jharkhand and Chhattisgarh targeting
more than 400 villages.
The second is in the field of education where Tata
Steel will open schools for the children of tribal communities
and scheduled caste families, a company release said
here.
At a function, Tata Steel director and managing director
of Corus, the British firm recently acquired by the
Indian major, Phillipe Varin, also released a book The
Romance of Tata Steel authored by RM Lala.
"This celebration of existence is not just a heritage
but it is a landmark for the future," Varin said.
Tata Steel Chairman Ratan Tata, in his message, congratulated
the company employees on the occasion. "Today is
a historic moment in time, as Tata Steel celebrates
the 100th year of existence," he said in the message.
Tata Steel managing director B Muthuraman said, "This
is a very special day for Tata Steel. Any celebration
or achievement has to be earned and as a 100-year-old
company, Tata Steel's contribution in India has been
acknowledged by all."
"As we celebrate the centenary year of our company
dreamt by our founder, I hope the younger generation
of Tata Steel carry the philosophy with equal zeal and
enthusiasm."
The function was concluded with a special company anthem,
penned by noted lyricist Javed Akhtar.
