Tata Steel sets up maths academy in Orissa

Tata Steel has joined hands with the Orissa government
to set up an institute of excellence in Mathematics
in Bhubaneswar. The ground breaking ceremony of the
institute was held here yesterday. The first phase of
the institute, designed by the renowned architect Karan
Grover, will be built at a cost of Rs 5 crore. The prime
objective of this institute is to strive for excellence
and spread the culture of mathematical competence at
all levels of the society. The institute will also promote
fundamental research in mathematics and its applications.
It will provide guidance in research
for Doctoral and Post-Doctoral scholars. The Institute
of Mathematics will work as a repository of knowledge
and information. It would also help bringing outstanding
people from far and near to expose new vistas of knowledge
to the local mathematical community in the pattern of
the Institute of Oberwolfach in Germany. The foundation
stone for the Institute of Mathematics and Applications
was laid by the Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik.
Speaking on the occasion, Patnaik
lauded the role of the house of Tatas in promoting educational
excellence in the country and the state. He thanked
Tata Steel's initiatives for providing world class infrastructure
for the Institute of Mathematics and advised the other
corporate houses to take up similar initiatives for
the state. Subas Pani, the chief secretary, Orissa,
said that Tata Steel has always stood by the state during
need.
H M Nerurkar, vice president,
Kalinganagar Project, Tata Steel, while thanking the
state government's effort in providing all necessary
support for the project, reiterated the company's efforts
in providing better education, health and other facilities
to the people of the state. The Institute at the same
time would also encourage interested students to acquire
knowledge beyond their syllabi by creative processes.
The scholars of this institute will work as brand ambassadors
and create a demonstration effect with a definite well
structured programme.

Nagendra Kumar Pradhan, Prasanna Kumar Patsani, M P,
Bhubaneswar, Prof Swadhinananda Pattanayak, Director,
Institute of Mathematics were present on the occasion.
