Tata Steel's appetite for foreign acquisitions seems
to be growing with its chairman and managing director
B Muthuraman indicating on Tuesday that it would soon
be buying another company in South East Asia. "We
would be acquiring a company in the region (SE Asia).
This would be in the size of 2-3 million tonnes,"
he told reporters here after the release of the book
'Tata Steel' by Shriram Centre for Industrial Relations
and Human Resources.
Muthuraman also hinted at acquiring coal mines abroad
to "secure" Tata Steel's requirements of the
natural resource, but refused to give details about
the possible explorations abroad in this regard. Asked
about identifying countries where the acquisition would
take place, he evaded a direct reply, saying: "I
have read in papers about Indonesia and Vietnam. But
no final decision has been taken. Tata Steel had announced
earlier this month that it would make up to Rs 1,00,000
crore investment in creating greenfield capacities as
well as expansion of existing plant in Jamshedpur.
