Established in April 1986,
Tata Sponge Iron (TSIL) is in the business of manufacture
of sponge iron. Located at Bilaipada (near Joda), the
company was initially set up, as a joint venture undertaking,
by Tata Steel and the Industrial Promotion and Investment
Corporation of Orissa (IPICOL). TSIL is today an associate
company of Tata Steel, following the latter's acquisition
of IPICOL's entire stake in 1991.
Areas
of business
TSIL was a pioneering effort by Tata Steel to bring
industrialisation to a backward area of Orissa by incorporating
a totally indigenous technology for making sponge iron,
which was developed through intensive R&D efforts
of Tata Steel. In view of the growing demand for sponge
iron, TSIL has since increased its capacity to 390,000
tonnes per annum (TPA) by adding another 2 kilns of
120,000 TPA and 150,000 TPA capacity.
It has set up a
captive power plant of 7.5 MW, not only to become self-sufficient
in the consumption of electrical power but also explore
an avenue to sell surplus power for additional revenue
to the company. Also on the anvil is its second power
plant of 18.5 MW, which is likely to be commissioned
in May 2006.
Future
plans
TSIL has plans to make considerable investments
in Orissa. the company plans to grow its sponge iron-making
capacity to 840,000 TPA and its power generation capability
to 63 MW. The plant has already received a coal block
which will not only make it self-sufficient in coal
consumption but also provide an avenue to generate power
from the middlings and generate additional revenue.
Later, the company plans to set up a steel-making facility
of 1.5 million tonnes.
Social
welfare activities
Social welfare
activities in the fields of drinking water, education,
medical services, agriculture, sports and welfare have
been given due priority by TSIL in the five gram
panchayats (comprising 50 villages) surrounding
the company.
TSIL also supports Vidya
Shakti Niyas, a charitable trust managed by the female
residents of the company township. The trust extends
charity in the surrounding villages in the form of distribution
of blankets / clothes, teaching materials for the schools,
weekly medical camps, literacy programmes for adults
and children, vocational training and self-employment
programmes for village youth, among others.
