Tata Group refutes misleading report on
sale of car-dealership arm
January 16,
2004
Mumbai: The
Tata Group today refuted a misleading report that appeared in The
Times of India issue of January 16, 2004, which stated,
under the headline ‘Tatas decide to exit from car retailing
venture’, that "The Tata Group… is identifying buyers
for its dealership arm, Concorde Motors".
Speaking on the issue, Tata
Group chairman Ratan Tata said, "The story is misleading,
is not based on facts, and is out of context… In response to
a question whether we are considering expanding Concorde
operations, I mentioned that we are not considering such
expansion plans, as it would seem to be in conflict with our
dealerships. However, to another question on plans to exit
from this business, I responded that we are not exiting, nor
are we pursuing consciously any such option, but we would be
open to consider if there is any proposal for acquiring it in
future."
Mr Tata
further said that the story incorrectly states
that the group was in the process of implementing
a decision to exit from Concorde. "I am very
pleased at the turnaround in performance that
Concorde has achieved in the recent months and
its current performance," Mr Tata clarified.
"I am sure that… Concorde will show further
significant improvements, and establish itself
as a provider of high standards of sales and service
support in automotive retailing."
