Gujarat Earthquake -Bulletin V
February 6, 2001

After a detailed survey of the earthquake ravaged area, the Tata Relief Committee is proceeding to adopt a few villages in the close vicinity of Bhuj. These villages are the Lodai group of villages, Vantra, Jawaharnagar in Bhuj taluka and in Anjar taluka. In addition, resources permitting, the relief operations may also be extended to villages near Morvi. As mentioned earlier, the Tata Relief Committee will be working closely with a local NGO (The Kutch Nav Nirman Abhiyan) to ensure that relief material reaches the affected people expeditiously. The extent of assistance required is being assessed and plan of action has been drawn up.

The four committees have set up an end-to-end supply chain to ensure that relief material reaches the ultimate destination as quickly as possible. Captain Rao of Forbes Gokak Ltd  who is heading the transport committee has arranged for relief goods to be collected at Mulund land port and transported by container to Ahmedabad where it is being trans-shipped with the assistance of an NGO (The Jan Vikas Kendra) in small lorry loads to Bhuj where Tata Chemicals has set up a collection centre manned by some of its senior personnel.

The Tata team along with NGOs (Abhiyan) is doing a rapid assessment study and providing inputs on the extent of relief measures that can be provided by the Tata Relief Committee. Their report is expected by February 8, 2001.
