You
will be relieved to know that there has been no serious damage to any Tata establishment,
nor any loss of life or injury to Tata personnel as a result of the recent earthquake in
Gujarat.
Tata Chemicals reports that its
factory in Mithapur suffered only minor damage to certain structures. The plant was taken
off-line for inspection and is being carefully brought back on-line in stages. Tata
Chemicals has taken the lead in providing relief to affected people in the surrounding
areas of Dwarka and Okha. The company has formed a team to assist in relief work and to
provide it in the form of medical support, water and food.
Many Tata companies have already
swung into action for relief activities Tata Steel employees have decided to donate
one days salary, which works out to Rs.1.5 crore. The company will make a matching
contribution. A senior member of Tata Steel has been nominated to coordinate relief
activities of the company, and is, at this moment in Bhuj assessing the degree of damage
and resultant relief needs, in conjunction with the district administration. Tata Steel is
flying in 320 units of blood as well as 10,000 blankets.
In
Mumbai, a team has been set up comprising members
from Tata Chemicals, Tata Trusts, TCCI and CAD.
Mr. Jamshed Kanga, who has had previous experience
in supervising group relief activities for Latur
is also involved.
