Tata
Group chanting HR mantra
Greater
accent on young talent & financial performance
Financial Express - March 17, 2003
The
Rs 40,000-crore Tata group has accomplished nearly
half its journey of transformation in human resource
(HR) development, which it began in 2000.
The
process involved the group driving excellence
and moving towards a more younger appeal in 60
months. The transformation is half way to completion,
and according to Tata Sons Ltd executive vice-president
(group human resources) Satish Pradhan, it is
well on target.
The
group’s overall business transformation — from
a generic-driven business to a brand-driven one,
and enabling group companies to attain positions
among the top three in their respective sectors
— began in 1991 under the leadership of group
chairman Ratan Tata.
The
125-year-old Tata group of companies has a stronghold
in seven business sectors and 80 companies under
its belt. It is this brand-driven passion which
has seen a noticeable change in the past three
or four years.
"We
have not missed the bus, nor have we reached the
top. We are working hard and need to stay there
and work towards this common goal," says
Mr Pradhan with regard to HR transformation.
The
group, which has roped in University of Michigan
Business School clinical professor of business
Dr Wayne Brockbank, will see its HR function being
aligned to increased financial performance. It
is in the process of redefining the capabilities
of its people to compete in different businesses.
The
Tata group is now pursuing a brand new slogan
with great gusto — to have a young, live, vibrant
image to the discerning customer.
When
asked about the trend of targeting the younger
generation,
Mr Pradhan says: "This focus is part of a
function to improve the entire process. We have
a clear picture of what we want to be, and are
moving about in a more systematic manner, which
will bring about a change in the years to come."
The
move is aimed at becoming more effective in a
globalised environment. It is also beginning to
see a younger leadership emerging across the group,
says Mr Pradhan.
