North Delhi Power Limited inducts CISF to help curb power theft
June 13, 2007

Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) has been inducted to help North Delhi Power Limited (NDPL) curb the menace of power theft in its distribution network. The formal induction ceremony took place on May 18, 2007. R Narayanaswami, chief secretary, government of NCT of Delhi was the chief guest on the occasion. Rakesh Mehta, principal secretary, power, government of NCT of Delhi and S P Singh, IG, CISF were also present along with other dignitaries.

Speaking on the occasion Sunil Wadhwa, chief executive officer and executive director, NDPL said, "We welcome the induction of CISF along with our enforcement team. I am confident that we will succeed in bringing down the AT&C loss levels even further with their support. The reduction of AT&C losses from 53 per cent to 24 per cent since July 2002 has been an uphill task. We faced stiff physical resistance from various theft prone areas. There have been instances when our teams have faced assault, stone pelting and other forms of organised resistance. The situation prevails even today in certain areas with very high theft levels. We are hopeful that CISF will be able to provide our teams with that much needed security and diffuse such volatile situations should they arise."

The CISF company deputed by the government comprising 114 personnel is working jointly with Delhi police and NDPL in drive against theft of electricity. The CISF team can detain a power thief without a warrant before handing the accused over to the police for further legal action.
