Tata Motors
selects first batch of trainees from amongst Singur residents January
4, 2007 Tata
Motors today announced selection of a group of 11 trainees from among residents
of Singur villages for an extensive 6-month training to be provided by the company. The
11 trainees, all of whom have in the past attended government-run Industrial Training
Institute (ITI) courses, have been selected out of 21 such candidates who responded
to Tata Motors' initiative and appeared for a written test and interview held
on December 25, 2006, at Singur. The candidates had earlier registered with the
West Bengal Industrial Development Corporation (WBIDC) camp office in Singur. Tata
Motors plans to hold another round of such tests for fresh registration of ITI-trained
local candidates. Interested eligible candidates from the Singur Project area
can register their names with the WBIDC camp office in Singur. During
the six-month intensive training provided by the company, the 11 trainees will
cover various disciplines related to their trades. Tata Motors will provide them
with hostel facilities and also pay a monthly stipend during the six-month period.
On successful completion of the training programme, they will be eligible for
employment in the small car project at Singur. The
10 candidates, who did not qualify at the December 25 examination, will be given
training in appropriate skills to enhance their employability. This
initiative is the beginning of Tata Motors' comprehensive community development
programme for Singur, in line with the company's practices in other locations.
The programme includes: a)
Training, according to an individual's educational qualifications and skill, to
improve their employability and also create opportunities for self employment. b)
Training women for employability - through facilitation of cooperative societies
- to produce a diverse range of items, which could be used at the Tata Motors
plant or the vendor plants. c)
Social development in the Singur area, through community centres, and support
for primary health, primary / secondary education and adult education.
