Commercial
vehicle sales up 4.1% Indica sales up 51%

Tata
Engineering reported a total sale of 14761 vehicles
in the domestic market in September 2001, representing
an increase
of 9.6% over 13446 vehicles sold in September
2000.
Commercial Vehicles
The Company's total commercial vehicle sales in
September 2001 stood at 7462 nos. showing a growth
of 4.1% over the corresponding period last year
and 13% over the previous month this year.
This
was primarily led by a robust growth of nearly
34% in the Medium and Heavy segment in September
and about 7% in the six-month period April-September,
2001. The sale of light commercial vehicles continues
to remain weak at 2107 nos. sold in September
2001.
Passenger Cars
The passenger car business achieved
a growth of 15.7% in September 2001 with a total
sale of 7299 vehicles in the domestic market and
ended the first 6 months of the financial year
with a cumulative sale of 39022 vehicles - a growth
of 1.1% against an overall industry decline of
3.5%. The Company increased its market share to 11.7% of the total
passenger car and utility vehicle market comprising
of 13 manufacturers from 10.6% last year.
Indica
sales grew for the fourth consecutive month with
a growth of 51% at 5405 nos. in September 2001
with cumulative sales at 27535 nos. registering
a growth of 10.3%.
Indica became the highest selling car in
its segment for the first time in September and
has ended the first 6 months with a market share
of 20% in an 8 model segment comprising of 5 manufacturers.
Utility vehicle sales in September were
1891 nos. and ended the first 6 months of the
financial year with a decline of 15% at 11440
nos. The
Company's market share stood at 23% in the utility
vehicle segment.
