Tata Engineering sales for June 2001

Tata Engineering registered a sale of 12, 833 vehicles in June 2001 as against 12,850 vehicles sold in June 2000 and 11,134 in May 2001.

Commercial vehicles
Medium and heavy commercial vehicle sales touched 3,882 in June 2001, a marginal improvement over the 3,850 vehicles sold in June 2000, but a substantial 56.60 per cent over the May 2001 sales of 2,479 vehicles.

Sales of light commercial vehicles registered a decline of 540 units, from 2,700 in June of last year to 2,160 units this month. However, the sales showed a 44. 6 per cent rise over the May 2001 sales of 1,494 vehicles.

Indica sales up 16.5 per cent in June
Indica posted a robust performance in June 2001 with sales of 4,758 cars – a growth of 16.5 per cent over June 2000 – and ended the first quarter with a sale of 12,768 cars. It was among the few cars to have held on to May 2001 level of sales in a month when most brands and manufacturers saw a fall over May 2001 sales. Indica sales have been on an upswing since January this year and the demand for its V2 range has consistently outstripped supply since its launch early this year. The car ended the first quarter with a market share of 12.2 per cent in an eight-model segment, an improvement of 10.6 per cent over what it had in the last financial year.

Utility vehicle sales, at 2,019 pieces, were 8.4 per cent below June 2000 levels in a month when industry sales declined by 10.6 per cent. The company ended the first quarter with a total sale of 5,753 vehicles. Its market share in June 2001 increased to 26.8 per cent and the company ended the first quarter with a market share of 23.8 per cent. The launch of the Sumo Ezi model has met with an encouraging response in the market, helping the company to enhance its presence in the personal segment.

The total sales of the passenger car business unit of the company was 6,791 for the month with a cumulative first quarter sale of 18,556. Overall the industry grew by a marginal 0.4 per cent in the first quarter, with the car segment showing a cumulative growth of 0.8 per cent while the utility vehicle segment declined by 1.9 per cent.

Exports
The company exported 826 vehicles in June 2001 and the total for the quarter April-June 2001 stood at 1,950 vehicles.
