Motors may use MG Rover tie-up for exports of Indigo

Riding
high on the success of its first sedan Tata Indigo,
Tata Motors may extend the existing product agreement
with MG Rover of the UK for exporting the car
to various European countries. S Krishnan, head,
car product group, Tata Motors, said that there
were definite plans to export the Tata Indigo
sedan and Tata Indigo Marina, a station wagon
in the 'C' segment, to Europe.
Asked whether the present arrangement with Rover
would be utilised for this purpose, Mr Krishnan
said that discussions in this regard might take
place at a certain point of time. Through the
Rover tie-up, Tata Motors exported 7,000 Tata
Indicas to Europe last year, Mr Krishnan said.
Tata Indica was also being sold in Malta and Bangladesh.
He said that the company was now eyeing the South
African car market in a big way which had a huge
potential.
In the first five months of the current financial
year, the company posted 29% growth in sales.
For the full year, the expected growth would be
between 15% to 20%. Asked about the status of
the Rs one lakh car project, which was announced
by Tata Motors chairman Ratan Tata almost a year
back, Mr Krishnan said that it was still at the
research and development stage.
