Tata
Engg rolls out Indigo Station Wagon
Financial
Express - March 5, 2003
Tata Engineering (Telco)
unveiled the Tata Indigo Station Wagon at the
Geneva Auto Show on Tuesday. The car was unveiled
by Telco chairman Ratan Tata. The station wagon
is an extension of the compact car platform, on
which the company has already launched the hatchback
(Indica) and sedan (Indigo) version in India.
Telco’s
full range of passenger cars will be available,
in both gasoline and diesel versions, from autumn
2003 through a wide distribution network in Europe,
according to the company. The company, however,
is yet to decide on the pricing of the station
wagon.
Telco
is looking towards launching the station wagon
in India around April this year.
The
car is powered by Euro III compliant 85 ps (62.3
kW) gasoline and 70 ps (52 kW) turbo-charged,
inter-cooled diesel engines. The Indigo Station
Wagon has McPherson strut suspension at the front
and a 3-link, independent suspension at the rear
for maximum ride comfort and handling.
In
a major international thrust following the deal
with MG Rover and the launch of the Indigo, Telco
is working on a comprehensive international business
strategy spanning its passenger car business portfolio.
While the company would be increasingly looking
at “co-operation” arrangements with international
players - on the lines of the recent deal with
MG Rover for the Indica - Telco would also be
looking at country-specific requirements for its
offerings.
The
profile of markets for the mid-sized car in Europe
is different - some markets prefer the hatchback,
while some prefer the sedan. With this in mind,
Telco will accordingly assign export markets for
the Indigo and its forthcoming estate version
of the Indica. “The strategy for the Indigo will
be in conjunction with the estate station wagon
which will be launched towards the end of the
current fiscal,” Telco executive director (passenger
car business unit) Dr V Sumantran had told FE.
