The
main attraction of last month’s Auto Expo was
definitely the part where Ratan Tata pulled the
wraps off the new Tata Sedan. This eagerly awaited
car will begin rolling off the company’s manufacturing
unit in Pune sometime in the last quarter of the
year.
But
for all you motorists who think Tata has just
decided to capitalise on the success of the Indica
and added a boot onto the basic Indica hatchback,
its not the case. Tata Sedan includes a 50mm extension
of the Indica’s 2400mm wheelbase thus making more
room space and legroom. The exteriors, though,
could have been better conceptualised. The most
striking part of the rear deck is the large trapezoidal
tail lamps. The bumpers have rub tails on front,
rear as well as the sides and look neat. The interiors
are definitely better than an Indica.
The
rear seat has improved and has a better recline
angle. The car has also been given a three-link
suspension at the rear making the ride more comfortable.
Both the petrol as well as the diesel get the
same 1405cc four cylinder engines. The petrol
version pumps out 85bhp and is ready for Euro
III compliance. The diesel has a KKK turbocharger
with an output of 60bhp and a torque of 122.63
Nm. Tata Engineering needs to address certain
quality and performance issues before launching
the vehicle sometime in September. But the signs
are all there for this one to be a success.
