March 13, 2008
Tata AutoComp GY Batteries (TGY), a 50:50
joint venture between Tata AutoComp Systems (Taco) and
GS Yuasa International (GYIN) of Japan, is planning
to set up separate production line for two-wheeler batteries
at an investment of Rs 70 crore.
"Battery has become an integral part of two-wheelers.
We are conducting a feasibility study on this market.
We plan to set up a production line for two-wheeler
batteries within our existing facility at Ranjangaon
near Pune and may manufacture conventional and valve-regulated
lead acid (VRLA) gel batteries," Rajeev Malik,
head (marketing), TGY, said.
TGY imports conventional two-wheeler batteries from
Yuasa Batteries, Thailand, and sells 25,000 batteries
per year. The market for two-wheeler batteries in India
is pegged at 18 million units, of which the organised
sector accounts for 45 per cent.
Announcing the launch of Tata Green inverter batteries
in Andhra Pradesh, Malik said the company had drawn
up a growth plan to ramp up production at its Pune facility.
The capacity at the Pune facility will be expanded to
1 million units by October 2008.
