The shocked painter vows to paint fresh canvases to replace the ones gutted in the fire at the heritage hotel
His landmark paintings at the Taj Mahal Palace were destroyed, but now veteran artist MF Husain plans to paint new ones as a tribute and gift them to the hotel. MF Husain’s three paintings had pride of place in the lobby of the heritage hotel Taj Mahal Palace for the last eight years. All three paintings were destroyed in the terrorist attack on the hotel.
Husain, speaking to After Hours from Dubai, expressed utter shock at the carnage. “I am terribly shocked. I cannot express my feelings in words. It was SM Krishna, one of Ratan Tata’s right hand men, who invited me to paint for the hotel in the year 2000 when it was getting renovated. I stayed for three to four months in the Heritage suite (which has been gutted in the fire). The Tatas are great hosts and they have treated me really well. Ratan and his great grandfather Jamsetji have always been great patrons of art and culture. The Taj has so many paintings, apart from mine. I shudder to think what’s happened to them. The Taj is the only hotel in Mumbai which has always given so much emphasis to modern art. I truly laud the Tatas for whatever they have done for the nation, while most other businessmen have only been interested in furthering their own interests.”
The nonagenarian painter says he feels the urge to do something for Tata and the heroic staff of the hotel. “Sitting here in Dubai I’m still shocked and feeling terribly helpless. But I have to do something about this so, I have decided to paint a series of paintings condemning the attack. I’m sure someday the Taj will regain its glory and I hope to show these paintings there. It would also be my personal tribute to all those workers and staff members of the Taj who laid down their lives for others.”
