Hotels takes over the management of The Pierre, New
York
Makes
its debut in the New York luxury market with the city's
landmark hotel
June 27, 2005
Taj
Hotels Resorts and Palaces, one of South Asia's largest
and finest hotel groups, today announced its return
to the United States by entering into a management contract
to operate and manage The Pierre, a luxurious landmark
hotel on New York's Fifth Avenue. This new addition
to its growing portfolio of international and domestic
hotels is part of Taj Hotels' long-term strategy to
establish its presence in key gateway cities of the
world.
Speaking on the occasion, Raymond
Bickson, Managing Director & CEO, The Indian Hotels
Company Limited, said, "The Pierre has all the
hallmarks of a great hotel: rich heritage, splendid
location and grand old-world architecture. We are delighted
to mark our return to New York with this iconic hotel
and we are committed to ensuring it continues to symbolize
uncompromising luxury not only in this market but around
the world. Our return to New York is a big step towards
establishing a significant presence for the Taj brand
across the globe."
Situated on Central Park at Fifth
Avenue and 61st Street, The Pierre has been an icon
of luxurious hospitality in New York since its launch
in 1930. The Pierre, with its neoclassic spire and distinctive
copper roof, rises majestically above Fifth Avenue and
Central Park. A tranquil refuge in the heart of New
York City, this historic hotel combines the inviting
comfort of the finest European residences with modern-day
amenities and impeccable standards of service. Classical
architecture, accented by a whimsical palette, Italian
marble, gilded-crown moldings and exquisite hand-woven
carpets, reflect the grandeur of The Pierre.
Close to a wide array of New
York's fabled attractions, from the renowned shopping
of Fifth and Madison Avenues to outstanding museums
and cultural centers, the hotel offers 201 guest rooms,
including 52 suites, each with a unique interior, along
with legendary restaurants, luxurious fitness facilities,
a full-service Business Center and versatile meeting
and function space. Under the management of the Taj,
the current mix of hotel rooms and permanent resident
spaces will remain unchanged. Over the next few months,
the Taj will upgrade and renovate certain areas of the
hotel.
"Speaking for the owners
of The Pierre, I herald with great enthusiasm the arrival
of Taj Hotels in its new role of manager and guardian
of this unique edifice. Taj brings a wealth of experience
in luxury service and maintenance and a sincere commitment
to both. We anticipate a long productive partnership.
Welcome to our home." said Phyllis Mailman, Chairman,
795 5th Avenue Corporation, the cooperative owners of
the property.
With a legacy dating back
to the launch of its landmark hotel, the Taj Mahal Palace
& Tower in 1903, the Taj luxury hotels across the
world have become destinations in themselves, offering
distinctive service and unrivalled luxury.
