Profile
Hooghly Met Coke and Power Company (HMCPC), a joint
venture between Tata Steel and West Bengal Industrial
Development Corporation (WBIDC), is the most recent
addition to the Tata Group. The company was incorporated
in February 2005 with Tata Steel holding 98-per cent,
and WBIDC a 2-per cent stake.
The company is currently setting
up a greenfield project at Haldia, West Bengal, with
a proposed capacity of 1.6 million tonne of high-quality
metallurgical coke. At its full capacity, it will be
the largest stand-alone coke plant in India and one
of the largest in the world. The project will supply
metallurgical coke to the blast furnaces of Tata Steel
at Jamshedpur. The waste heat generated by the plant
will also be re-utilised for power generation by Tata
Power, with a capacity of 120 mw. The envisaged
cost of the project is around Rs1,150 crore (excluding
investment by Tata Power). The company expects to begin
operations by 2008.
The project will generate additional
revenue for the Haldia Dock Complex. It will source
most of its semi-skilled and skilled workforce from
local areas of Haldia to meet the aspirations of the
people. The technology adopted by the company is designed
to meet stringent environmental norms and is the most
environment-friendly technology in coke making.
Location
The company is headquartered in Kolkata.
