Tata group partners with Water Abundance XPRIZE
The Tata group is partnering with the global nonprofit, XPRIZE, to address one of the biggest challenges facing the world – the scarcity of safe and clean water. The group is supporting the Water Abundance XPRIZE, which aims to decentralise access to water, giving people the power to access fresh water, whenever and wherever they need it.
The $1.75 million Water Abundance XPRIZE is a global competition that will incentivise breakthrough technologies to extract a minimum of 2,000 litres of water per day from the atmosphere using 100 percent renewable energy, at a cost of no more than 2 cents per litre. The winner of the challenge takes home a grand prize of $1,500,000.

Water is the most vital element for life on our planet. With burgeoning populations and increased industrial and agrarian demand for water, our limited ground and surface water resources are in severe decline. We believe it is time to look for new, sustainable sources of water.

XPRIZE utilises a combination of gamification, crowd-sourcing, incentive prize theory, and exponential technologies to create impact. In the past, its competitions included the $30-million Google Lunar XPRIZE, the $20-million NRG COSIA Carbon XPRIZE, the $15-million Global Learning XPRIZE, the $10-million Qualcomm Tricorder XPRIZE, the $7-million Shell Ocean Discovery XPRIZE, the $7-million Barbara Bush Foundation Adult Literacy XPRIZE and the $5-million IBM Watson AI XPRIZE.
