Tata Power provides increased income generation opportunity to farmers in Lonavala

  • Distributes 1,500kg of high-yielding paddy seeds to 150 farmers
  • Per-acre yield of paddy increased by 1.5 times in comparision to previous year
Lonavala: Reiterating its commitment towards community development, Tata Power, India’s largest integrated private utility, distributed high-yielding paddy seeds (Indryani) to 150 farmers in nine villages of Shirwata, Kundli catchment areas and around Bhivpuri and Bhira power plants as part of creating income generation opportunities for the farmers. The total quantity of seeds distributed was 1,500kg (10kg per farmer).

Tata Power commenced distribution of the high-yielding paddy seeds in 2010, among 56 farmers, which resulted in increased yield of paddy by 1.5 times vis-a-vis the previous year. This also enabled increase in the paddy straw which is used as fodder for cattle. The initiative received encouraging response and witnessed more and more farmers opting for high-yielding seed varieties this year.

In addition to distribution of seeds, Tata Power also organised educational sessions to farmers on the planting methods, fertilisers to be used and thereby maximise per-acre yield. Further, routine visits of agriculture experts were arranged to guide the farmers.

Speaking on the occasion, Mahesh Paranjpe, head, hydros, Tata Power, said, “The objective of this initiative is to educate the farmers to maximise the per-acre yield to increase their income. Further, the interaction with agriculture experts will keep them abreast on the developments in agriculture which can be implemented to their benefit.”
