Green building (a TCS initiative)

TCS Kalinga Park, TCS’s delivery centre in Bhubaneswar is designed to be India’s first LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) certified IT campus

TCS Kalinga Park, TCS’s delivery centre in Bhubaneswar is designed to be India’s first LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) certified IT campus, conforming to the highest LEED rating — Platinum. Developed by the US Green Building Council, this rating system provides a suite of standards for environmentally sustainable construction.

The delivery centre, spread across a sprawling 45 acres with a total built-up area of 8 lakh square feet and 50 per cent green area cover, has been developed by the Orissa Infrastructure Development Corporation, in conjunction with TCS. The first unit of the facility opened in 2006 with a capacity of 1,002 seats. Upon completion of the third and final phase, it will seat 7,000 associates.

The state-of-the-art structure conforms to global standards in terms of industry-specific norms as well as the requirements of ergonomics. It was awarded 56 points out of 69 in the LEED assessment.

The delivery centre’s structure and services have been designed to drastically cut down power consumption in all facilities and systems, including heating, ventilation and air conditioning. Sophisticated building management systems have been installed to monitor, report and regulate energy consumption, and energy modelling indicates an estimated 32 per cent reduction in power consumption.

TCS Kalinga Park has been designated a ‘Green Building’, which means its design and construction significantly reduce or eliminate the negative impact of buildings on the environment and their occupants, in five broad areas: site planning, water management, energy, material use and indoor environmental quality.

TCS Kalinga Park’s features include controllable lighting systems through the use of task lighting, controllable comfort systems based on variable air volume, high-efficiency chillers for energy conservation, thermal paints and insulators, on-site generation of renewable energy, water harvesting and recharging, use of grey water for flushing and landscaping, use of regional and rapidly renewable materials and materials with recyclable content, and the use of low carbon dioxide emitting materials.

Reducing its environmental footprint is integral to TCS’s strategic development model. TCS Kalinga Park is testimony to this commitment.
