R. Ramanan
is CMC's new MD and CEO

Ramanathan Ramanan is the new managing director
and chief executive officer, CMC. He succeeded
S. S. Ghosh, who retired on December 12, 2003.
Mr Ramanan has been associated with CMC since
2001.
An electrical engineer from IIT Mumbai, Ramanan
has shouldered several responsibilities in India
and in the global market in a career spanning
over 20 years. He started as a software engineer
at Tata Consultancy Services and soon grew in
rank to project leader, group leader and an overseas
regional manager representing TCS in the USA.
During his tenure with TCS America as regional
manager he was responsible for the growth of TCS’
business in the United States and the initiation
of strong relationships with several multi-national
organisations. In July 1996, Ramanan returned
to India and was appointed head of TCS Bangalore.
Under his stewardship, TCS Bangalore grew from
250 consultants to over 2000+ consultants. He
was responsible for implementing various quality
initiatives in TCS Bangalore, which is operating
at SEI-CMM Level 5 and is an ISO 9001-certified
delivery centre. Ramanan has also been responsible
for a number of the strategic business development
initiatives of TCS in the Asia Pacific region.
Following the purchase of 51 per cent of CMC by
Tata Sons, Ramanan was inducted on the board of
CMC in October, 2001 as director and chief operating
officer. In the last two years, Ramanan has focused
his energies on leveraging the strong intellectual
assets of CMC especially in global markets. He
has been responsible for CMC’s foray into the
international market through enhanced integration
with TCS. Ramanan has also been leading CMC’s
quality initiatives, which resulted in SEI-CMM
Level 5 certification for its development centre.
He also continues to play a key role in the strategy
group at TCS especially in the area of organisational
synergies and is a strategic member of the TBEM
initiative with special focus on 'customer market
focus'.
Mr Ghosh retires from CMC, after a successful
career in the company spanning over 25 years.
He has served CMC as divisional manager / general
manger in the eastern and western regions. He
steadily rose to become the executive director
— customer services, a strategic business unit
of CMC. He was inducted on the board of CMC as
director — technical in 1996. He was appointed
as chairman and managing director of the company
in July 1998 and was redesignated as managing
director and CEO in October, 2001.
