TCS opens operation base in Bhubaneswar

Calcutta: Tata Consultancy Services (TCS), country’s leading software services company, has expanded its operations to Bhubaneswar by setting up a base.

Presently TCS is also in talks with the West Bengal government for setting up a joint venture.

TCS offshore centre in Calcutta, which is the technology solutions pioneer in eastern India, has over 900 professionals, will now have Bhubaneswar as its second satellite-centre in the eastern region after Jamshedpur.

The company has already bagged four projects from the new centre in Bhubaneswar.

TCS’ Calcutta operations alone accounted for a little over a quarter of the Rs 700 crore software exports from West Bengal last fiscal. It also accounted for nearly nine per cent of the total Rs 2,115 crore TCS revenues in the last fiscal.

TCS-Calcutta has expanded its reach in the eastern India through its office network and communications infrastructure. It already has a full-fledged office at Salt Lake and plans to officially commission a six-storey 1,35,000 sq ft Intelligent Building complex -- at Salt Lake. We are currently discussing the software project with TCS and are expecting a decision soon, state government sources said.

The share of the domestic market was marginally over 10 per cent of TCS’ total revenues last year. The domestic market revenues come mainly from TCS’ packaged software and the total packaged software registered earnings of nearly Rs 100 crore.

For the current fiscal TCS expects 25 per cent of its projected Rs 3,000 crore revenues for 2000-2001 to come from e-establishments and integration projects.

TCS-Calcutta centre has built up its core competency in business domains like utilities, manufacturing, banking, mining and health (hospital management). TCS has set up a corporate-wide Centre of Excellence for Oracle Applications.

This Excellence Centre, which operates from TCS-Calcutta, provides services like process mapping, solution configuring, customisation, data migration and interfacing. Besides, it offers training and maintenance support to Oracle Applications users.

A data warehousing group provides consultancy on data warehousing strategies and data warehousing solutions by using its expertise in business function areas like Banking, Production & Distribution Control, Insurance, Non-banking Finance and Telecommunications. TCS-Calcutta centre, which shares common premises with VSNL, enjoys a strategic advantage as far as connectivity (leased network) to New York and London.
