Tata launches iron fortified salt

New Delhi, Apr 5 (IBNS) Tata Chemicals Limited, the country's leading salt manufacturer and marketer, on Thursday announced the launch of Tata Salt Plus, packaged iron fortified iodized salt, across major cities in India.

Speaking on the launch, R Mukundan, Managing Director, Tata Chemicals said, “Via Tata Salt Plus, we turn our focus to help our consumers fight iron deficiency anemia as well by offering an affordable, organic way in which to help meet established daily iron and iodine requirements.”

According to National Family Health Survey (NFHS-3), anemia has been found amongst 70-80% children, 70% pregnant women, 55% women in general and 25% adult men across population strata.

Iron deficiency is commonly known as the biggest cause of anemia.

Prevalence of anemia in India is high because of low dietary intake and especially poor availability of iron.

The Double Fortified Salt formulation has been developed by the National Institute of Nutrition, Hyderabad after more than two decades of research and studies.

In April 2011, the Prime Minister's Office (PMO) directed that salt available through government food programmes including ICDS, mid-day meal and public distribution system should be fortified with iron and iodine.
