Nusserwanji Tata, the founder of the Tata Group, incorporated
the Indian Hotels Company on April 1, 1902, for the
ownership and operation of the renowned Taj Mahal Palace
and Tower, Mumbai. Indian Hotels and its subsidiaries
are collectively known as Taj Hotels Resorts and Palaces
and, together, form the largest hotel chain in India.
Indian Hotels' presence spans
different brands and price segments. It is famous for
providing world-class, personalised service to guests,
even as it retains an old-world charm by upholding the
traditions and heritage of India. Today the Taj brand
is synonymous with luxury and service, in India and
abroad and it currently comprises more than 50 hotels
in 37 locations across India as well as hospitality
properties in the Maldives, Mauritius, the UK, Nepal,

The Taj also runs Taj Air, a
luxury private jet service with two state-of-the-art
Falcon 2000 aircrafts, and Taj Yachts, two three-bedroom

and Kochi, in Kerala. In 1993, the Taj established the
Indian Institute of Hotel Management in Aurangabad,
Maharashtra. The Institute offers a three-year diploma,
designed with the help of international faculty, and
has affiliations with several American and European
programmes.

The Roots Corporation (RCL)
is a wholly owned subsidiary of Indian Hotels. Incorporated
on December 24, 2003, RCL operates the first-of-its-kind
'Smart Basics' category hotel in India. The first of the
hotels was launched in Bangalore and was called indiOne.
These hotels have been launched with a new name
Ginger Hotels in sync with the fresh, simple-yet-stylish
and warm world of Smart Basics. The Ginger hotels are
built around a unique concept that provides facilities
to meet the key needs of today's traveller, at surprisingly
affordable rates.
With rooms priced under Rs 1,000
per night, Ginger hotels have created a new category
in the domestic hospitality landscape, while giving
a major fillip to Indian tourism and other ancillary
industries. The primary objective behind the launch
of these hotels is to provide a superior product offering
and consistent experience to travellers, beyond the
present offerings in the industry.
