Srichapan's
success is due to hard work
Times of India -
December 28, 2002
The phenomenal rise
of Thai champion Paradorn Srichapan on the ATP circuit
actually began at last year’s Tata Open. He was the
first alternative and when there was a withdrawal, he
got a chance and had his first big win beating Max Miryni
of Belarus and went on to reach the final losing to
Guillermo Canas of Argentina.
Both the winner
and the finalist are back for the 2003 Tata Open but
this time the Thai player is seeded an amazing No.2.
He has had a remarkable
year and certainly the most improved as far as ranking
is concerned among the players on the ATP tour.
He has improved
his ranking to No. 16, making him the highest ranking
Asian and also the highest rank an Asian has reached
since, interestingly, myself in the late 70s and early
80s.
A year ago Paradorn
was playing a lot of Challenger level tournaments, but
has since made rapid strides. Coached and guided by
his wonderful father Chanachai, Paradorn, really came
to fame when he beat Andre Agassi at Wimbledon.
It has all come
together with tremendous hard work both on and off the
court and a dedicated father/coach to watch over him.
He has reached the highest level of tennis but has maintained
his wonderful Thai upbringing. Now that a Thai player
has gotten this far, I hope it will give our Indian
youngsters to not only strive to get to the top but
also to match it with commitment and hard work.
The game keeps getting
tougher and competition more and more fierce.
It is left entirely
to the individual and his small group around him to
work together to set him or her to the top. Certainly
the Indians can do it.
