Marg, a unique magazine of the
arts and a publisher of books on the arts, was founded
in 1946 and has been in continuous publication since.
Marg's founder editor, the late Mulk Raj Anand, intended
it to be a loose encyclopaedia of the arts of India
and related civilisations.
Marg which means 'pathway'
in Sanskrit was initially an acronym for Modern
Architectural Research Group. Its aim is to set high
standards and break new ground in the arts, to bring
about an awareness of the arts that is relevant and
applicable to India's future.
Marg has attempted to achieve
a broad cultural and historical view of the arts through
its magazines and books. It has published around 210
magazines and 90 books on subjects ranging from well-planned
worker housing to the art of Burma.
Currently edited by art historian
Pratapaditya Pal, Marg has been a forum for much pioneering
research work. In India, Marg Publications has subscribers
from diverse areas. Its international subscriber base
includes institutions libraries, departments
of art history, museums, etc and individuals
in 32 countries.
Marg is a non-profit organisation.
Its publications are subsidised by income from the sale
of calendars, diaries and portfolios, and it is supported
by financial assistance from enlightened individuals
and companies. Among Marg's long-standing sponsors are
many Tata companies.
Magazines
Marg started with seven advertisements and two rooms
provided by JRD
Tata, the late chairman of the Tata Group. Its quarterly
magazine has articles by well-known scholars and art
historians from India and abroad. Available on subscription
or as individual copies, current issues have an average
of three thematic articles, articles on recent discoveries,
newsletters from India and abroad, and book reviews.
Books
The first hardcover edition of Marg published simultaneously
with the magazine was Persian Painters in 1976.
Each of Marg's books contains theme-based essays written
by various experts, and is 'guest edited' by an acknowledged
scholar in the field. Marg books are available as single
copies as also on subscription.
Films
Marg entered the arena of documentary films in 1997
with Purva Uttara: Past Forward, an eight-part
series of films on heritage sites in India. It has since
then backed several documentaries on art and culture.
Design services
With experienced editors and designers, Marg is well
equipped to produce books, catalogues, guidebooks, calendars
and diaries for clients. In undertaking such projects,
Marg sets itself the same high standards of excellence
in production quality as it does for its magazines and
books.
Location
The Marg office is located on the third floor of the
historic Army & Navy Building in Mumbai's Kala Ghoda
art precinct.
